Block #10: King's Crown and Fanny Jackson-Coppin (Joan)



Coppin State College in Baltimore, Maryland recognizes the formidable achievements of Fanny Jackson-Coppin, born into slavery in 1837 and purchased by her aunt when she was 12.  Ms. Jackson worked as a housekeeper for the Marylanbd Calvert family, graduated from and taught at Oberlin College, was the first African American school principal in the country, and served as a missionary in South Africa.

As to the photo....my idea of a wonderful snow day...quilting and a glass of red wine at the end of the day in one of the set of glasses my Mom received as a wedding gift in 1944...this was a challenging block...points did not match and were resewn many times. flying geese too large...and when all done or so I thought one of the half-square triangles was pointing the wrong direction and had to be ripped out...added borders to stabilize the over handled fabrics...plan to use the different Party of 12 fabrics as the cornerstones to tie the "busy" quilt together...now on to a replacement for Block #9...adding in green blades and a print background because the all red block while nice was too much of a blob of color for the quilt...at the end of this project I will have made half of another quilt!!!!..Happy Sewing to all...  Joan

King's Crown #10 (Lynn)

Two little birdies say that Spring is just around the corner, so hang in there.  I was so lucky that the printed block in the middle was exactly the right size to place in the center!  I didn't even need to trim it...don't know where I got it, but happy to find it a home :)

King's Crown #10 (Val)

Here's my block in honor of Fanny Jackson-Coppin.   There's still snow on my deck, but hoping Spring is just around the corner (no matter what the groundhog said)

Whirlwind # 9 (Val)

I made this block using freezer paper templates.  It was a pleasure to make such an easy block after some of the more challenging ones, good way to start the new year.

Block #9: Whirlwind -- Dedicated to Frances Perkins (Joan)

Frances Perkins was the first female to serve in a presidential cabinet, having been appointed Labor Secretary by FDR in 1933 and then also to the Civil Service Commission by President Truman in 1945.  A life-changing event for her was the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in NYC where 146 mostly young women seamstresses and other workers perished, leading her to champion better working conditions for women and children, and later the suffrage movement.  Ms. Perkins taught at Cornell University until her death in 1965 at age 85.   The US DOL building in DC is named for her.  What an inspiration!

I have now added navy as a sashing for my blocks.  May help me grow to like them!!!! Looking forward to #10...saving  #8 for last so I can use it to tie blocks together.

Whirlwind #9 (Lynn)
